COMBINE DANCE CAMP 2011 (27/28 DEC)

On 27/28 Dec, there was a Combine Dance Camp by all the schools that Mr Dan teach. NJC,HCI,SJC,HSS and CCHMS. On these both days, we were having a intensive dance camp and also a mini choreography that gonna made by ourselves. There are a total of 8 stations and each station duration was 1hr 15mins. There will be assessment which test our skills and technique

in dance. It was fun, challenging and also be able to make friends with other schools. We also can learn different things form each other and learn new jumps or dance steps.

KOREA TRIP 2011 (14-21 NOV)

On 14 Nov 2011, HSS MDC(Sec1-3)went to South Korea for a culture and arts immersion program. This enable our students:
1) To experience the first hand the social-economic development and cultural heritage of Korea;
2) Focus of the trip fot out SYF 2013 in terms of Korean traditional dance choreography, foot works and learning to wear traditional costumes(s);
3) The aims is to conduct a meaningful and sustainable educational projects with the Korean schools;
4) To promote youth leadership in performing arts through cultural and arts immersion; and
5) Also to visit sites and activities that is related to the various genre of dance education and explore the possibility of a school exchange program.

^^Everyone was happy and also learned a lot of things for this trip. Everyone learned things like the different types of dance, their learning experiences and more...!

Our Girls have gone to Korean Folk Village, Training Centre of Important Intangible Cultural Asset,Dance Workshop(Samulnori and Buchae Dance),Korean National Theatre,Seoul Central Mosque,Cheonggye Stream and Gwanghwamoon Plaza, Insadong Cultural Street, N Seoul Tower, Teddy Bear Museum, Myeong-dong Shopping Square, Nanta Show,Dongdae-mun,Namdae-mun and Everland!

LONG SOCKS-This type of socks allow your feet to be warm at all times :D Socks help to absorb this sweat and draw it to areas where air can evaporate the perspiration. In cold environments, socks decrease the risk of frostbite.

SPORT SHOE-Not easily slip and also keep your foot from freezing o.O

BOOT-Make your feet warm all the way till your knee:P

GLOVES-Comfort hands from cold. Material likes cloth, knitted or felted wool,etc.~

SCARF-A scarf is a piece of fabric worn around the neck, or near the head or around the waist for warmth

Well,after our Hong Kong trip, it is time for us to go to Korea! This coming holiday, the school will be organising a 7D5N Cultural Exchange trip to South Korea between 12th to 20th November. Girls are able to learn different types of Korea traditional dance and foot works; workshops of traditional make-up and costumes; performances on traditional korean dance like fan dance, masked dance, sleeve dance...etc;and on a cultural heritage of Korea-food and more...

History Of Korean Traditional Dance :P

Korean traditional dance originated in ancient shamanistic rituals thousands of years ago. By the time of the later Korean kingdoms, Goryeoand Joseon, in the 2nd millennium CE, Korean traditional dance benefited from regular support of the royal court, numerous academies, and even an official ministry of the government.
A number of different dances gained permanent high status, including the Hermit dance, the Ghost dance, Buchae Chum (the fan dance), Seung Mu (the Monk dance), the Oudong (Entertainer) dance and others, despite the fact that many had humble origins. For example, the Fan dance is believed to have originated with shamans performing nature rites with leaves but evolved into one of the most highly refined Korean dances
Other Korean dances remained and remain to this day under the ambit of farmers and folk dance groups. Props used in the dances include the long billowing silk scarf of pure white used in the Salpuri dance, drums, hats, swords and others. The props may be peripheral or central to the story of the dance. In the Ghost dance, the entertainer has a joyous reunion with a deceased spouse, only to endure the heartbreak of reseparation, and there may few or no props. On the other hand, the Great Drum dance (one of several forms of drum dances) features a gaudy drum which may be taller than the performer. The drum tempts a monk until finally he succumbs to it and performs a rolling drum "orgy."
Due to the cultural suppression by Imperial Japan, so called "cultural genocide" during the Colonial Korea,[2][3] most of the dance academies died out and some dances were lost[1] as well as some of dance forms were distorted.[4] However, few pioneering Korean dancers such asChoi Seung-hee (최승희 崔承喜) created new forms of Korean dances based on the traditional dances and kept many of the traditions alive in secret and abroad,[5] and today Korean traditional dance is enjoying a vibrant resurgence. Numerous universities in Korea teach Korean traditional dance, and even some universities abroad now provide instruction in the forms. Top dancers are recognized as "Living National Treasures" and are charged to pass their dances down to their students. On 17 Sep 2011, we girls went to a concert at TRCC THEATRE. There are 5 performance out of 7 which were being choregraph by our instructor, Mr Dan Kwoh_Fiesta,Solo Variations,Out of the Blue,Message and Lost Memories.Th girls enjoyed very much. From this, we are able to look at the diifferent types of dance to also gain more experinence about dance and also to look forward to this next year!

On that day, the Guest-Of-Honour is Mr Hawazi Dapi. We were also able to see different performances that had been performed in the ASEAN School Games.

Reflections on Combine dance camp @ SRJC with NJC & HCI.

Phoebe, Sec 2

After going for the combine dance camp, I felt that dace is very interesting and fun. We did a lot of activities and programs which was very fun. The activities we did were like playing games in our different groups and learning other kind of dance that we have not learn before. Although the camp hours was long and tiring, I think that it is worth as we get to learn lots of things.

I thought that the camp was very motivational as all the JC's were very good with their techniques. Hopefully our dancers will have the motivation to be as good as them. The workshops were very educational and fun as we get to experience the different kinds of dance.

I attended last year's dance camp at SRJC together with MDC and the rest of the schools that was under Mr Dan's class. We were separated among groups, and was partnered up with other dance girls from different schools. People were all unknown and I had to learn to gain confidence into speaking up, and played a role of teamwork with different people. I get to know new friends and I an excited to have learnt bollywood, hiphop and flamingo dance. This dance camp benefited us with activities like bonding games and dance competitions. I enjoyed these three fruitful days throughout my dancing years.

During the December holiday, we have 2 days dance camp in SRJC. We were then separated into different groups with dancers from different schools. I find the dance camp interesting as we can not only make new friends and learn new types of dance for example: Bollywood dance and Carmen. Learning different types of dance inspired me to find out or learn more about the dance. And of course it increases our knowledge and make me want to dance more! It is also relaxing and enjoyable as we have bonding games with our team-mates to interact with each other and we even choreograph our own dance too! I hope to attend more of these dance camps as it is fruitful and make us understand more about the word "Dance".

Time: 5pm (overnight stays will be not allowed under the use of Dance's annual BBQ name)

The Modern Dance Club had performed two dance items in the 35th Aniversary Concert at the Esplanade. They are Legend and Spirit of Evolution.

Legend is a dance which reflects how every individual strives for excellence. It features individuals wanting to move to a higher level of innovativeness and teamwork.

Spirit of Evolution uses props and costumes innovatively. The unique music with an Asian flavour attempts to show the transition from traditional to the modern. The youths embrace changes positively, seize golden opportunities, and shine like stars.

AYG COMBINED PRACTICE @ SRJC (REFLECTIONS)

We went to SRJC for combined practices during the last three days of the March Holidays. We went there to practise our AYG dance. Although i am in the so-called 'Chicken Rice' group, but i am still happy to take part in it.

We have made some new friends from other schools and when we watched the video that Mr Dan had taken, i am happy to see that the dance is very nice.

And I know we can dance even better and the dance will be very nice if we practise and focus more!

I feel that the 3 days practice at SRJC was enjoyable. I managed to make some friends from other schools too. I also found out that other schools have their dancing standard and they have many people in quantity. Although the JCs dancers are always infront/middle, they had shown us their dance quality. But there seem to be some problems with us as we don't know some steps that were decided finally. I hope that Mr Dan will teach us the final steps without neglecting anyone. The food there was superb compared to other box package food.

Overall, the combined practice was very fun and the dance that all of us performed in the school was nice too.

My 3 days dance camp experience was fun. I realised that there were many other dancers out there who could dance so much better than us even when we thought we were good enough. I felt honoured to be representing henderson, together with the HSSMDC to be selected to perform in the AYG. Even if the sec1s were not that involved in the dance, we managed to get a few parts, which we were somewhat contented with, We got to see how others practise and discipline themselves and how hard they train and practised for the combined display. We also managed to get more experience and pick up a few good points from them. This combined practice was a great and fun-filled experience for me, and i would be looking forward to more of these activities.

The reflections i am going to write today is about the 3 days of practice in SRJC. The other dancers from other schools were just brilliant! The prac might be tiring for me, but i really enjoyed it very much! I can see from the other dancers; the motivation in them and how they strive their best in the dance. They should be the role models for us. However, this does not stop me from dancing but instead, motivates me to work harder and strive for the best. I believe the other sec 1s will feel the same too. If we all work hard together as one, we can be able it do much more better than the other dancers in the schools. So whatever we do, we must strive our best to do it till the best!

I expected dance combined to be a really tiring and stress one, but i was proved wrong. It turned out to be a really fun and exciting one. We got into our groups, and my group is a mixture of Henderson as well as NJC. Mr Dan did alot of changes to the steps, and the steps he taught us and the other schools were different. We have to quickly adapt to the changes as we might seem weird compared to the others. As usual, we have got the even and odd groups again. Even group steps changed the most, but everyone still continued to dance. On the second day, we completed all the formation and steps. we all danced as a whole group together and it turned out quite nice. It reminds me of SYFOC 08! Afterall, I really enjoyed myself during these three days.

During the three days (AYG combined prac) we had in SRJC, i strongly feel that we have much more to improve on in order to catch up with the other schools' dancers. They are not only good in their basic techniques, they are also good in their attitude and the way they dance. Compared to their schools, our school only have a small number of dancers. Their leadership skills were also very strong! After these three days, i have learnt that being a dancer, we have to discipline ourselves and also to have a strong team spirit together!

HELLO DANCERS,

This few months have been a pretty exciting & thrilling time for us together with the secondary 2 & 3 students participating in SYFOC. At first, when we first hear about the SYFOC henderson is going to take part in, we didn't take it seriously and never thought that it was so enjoyable. After massive practices in the school hall with the lantern and pole warriors, we finally took a step forward to go to Singapore Indoor Stadium. Most of us started to find it fun and enjoyable only then. The real excitement came when it's the preview show, everyone started to feel so high and there's so much cheering and stuff that peaks up our mood from all those waiting at SIS for our turn to perform. Well, GOOD TIMES ALWAYS PASSES QUICKLY, like in just a split of minute, it's the actual performance already. But, we are less nervous than we were during the preview show. But there's so many spectators watching HENDERSON, and the reputation is in our hands. Fortunately, everything went really well and the praises are all flooding around the whole singapore indoor stadium. Everyone started cheering for HENDERSON and we all kept hugging one another and running around the whole stadium like as if we won the world cup. We spent quite a long time waving to our henderson friends and also bode farewell. Mr Dan went unexpectedly high after the performance.He went around shouting with us and shouting the henderson cheer. After biding farewell to our dear henderson "fans", we went back to our rooms. We are all pleased by our performance and we did our utmost best in the performance. But everything ended so fast. Remembering how we start from the beginning till the performance day, it went up step by step. Though many of us broke down on this special and fabulous day, it will always be embraced in our mind as the time passes........

SYF opening ceremony 08

Honestly, when i first joined dance, i hated it. But after the SYF opening ceremony performance, i love dance. I'm happy that the SYF performance was a success. That was the biggest and most memorable day of my life. At the beginning of the SYF practice, i thought that it was a waste of time. But when i saw the preforming area in the indoor stadium, i knew it- how big it is going to be. The part that i love most was the finale, because there was Shawn Tok! Not mainly because of Shawn Tok, but because that the finale dance enjoyable. I feel very glad that audiences from our school said that ours is the best item among all the schools. I want to thanks all the teacher coordinators, Mr Dan and Mr Kiki Tay for making the item a success. I love you all! Flight of Splendour- the best performance ever.
